Egypt Crude Oil Production

Crude oil production has declined by 15% since 2019 reaching 25 Mt (-3%/year), after fluctuating around 34-35 Mt since 2008. Production is concentrated in the Western Desert (56%) and the Gulf of Suez (23%). Egypt consumes almost all its oil production.

Egypt Oil Products Consumption

Oil consumption increased by 5% in 2024 to 41 Mt, after a 7% decline in 2023, and a rapid progression from 2020 to 2022 (10%/year). Previously, consumption has been hovering around 34 Mt between 2000 and 2020.

The largest share of the oil consumption is absorbed by the transport sector (44%), followed by industry (15%), hydrocarbon industry (13%), power generation (11%), and buildings (9%).

Egypt Natural Gas Consumption

Gas consumption increased slightly in 2024 (+1%) to 57 bcm, after declining rapidly from 2021 to 2023 (-15%). Before it has been constantly increasing since 2000 except in 2014 (-10%), reaching its peak in 2021 at 66 bcm. Increase in gas consumption is driven by electricity production, while declining local gas production has impacted the overall consumption.

Almost 57% of the gas is used for the generation of electricity followed by industry 29%.

Egypt Renewable in % Electricity Production

NREA, New & Renewable Energy Authority, was created in 1986 under the supervision of MERE to promote renewables. The Renewable Energy Law (2014) establishes different schemes for the private development of renewable energy projects, including the IPP public competitive bidding process, feed-in tariffs (FIT), and private-to-private sale of electricity from renewables.

Egypt CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions

In its updated NDC (2023), the country increased its GHG emissions reduction target to 37% by 2030, instead of 33% in the 2022 update (reduction relative to a BaU scenario). This new objective implies a level of emissions of around 134 MtCO2eq in 2030 and a reduction of 80.5 MtCO2eq compared to the BAU scenario.
